Program permission: Enrollment of students in the first level of academic higher education (bachelor programs) is carried out based on the results of the unified national exams or by the order of the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia No. 224/N (December 29, 2011). Students are enrolled based on administrative registration and the presidents’ order.
Program goals:

The program objective is to educate specialists in political science with high competence and liberal values of humanity and promote by that the democratic development and wellbeing of the Georgian society and international community. Students will be primarily given a fundamental knowledge of theories in political science as well as major tendencies and research approaches that are instrumental in developing analytical skills. The program graduates can be employed in international organizations and institutions based in Georgia, NGOs working in relevant issue-areas, public and state agencies  such as ministry of foreign affairs, as well as in local municipalities, party structures or national parliament at various junior positions such as junior specialist, program assistant, campaign coordinator, service providing specialist, junior manager or consulate department specialist.

Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding
  • After completing the program graduates will have:

    • knowledge of multiple areas in political science such as the political systems, functionality, regimes and forms/principles of governance, political ideologies, political philosophy, political theories, political institutions, culture and mechanisms, different political systems of states their constituting elements and processes, as well as relevant international political facts.
    • knowledge of theoretical foundations of international relations and global politics, causes of peace and war, international organizations and their institutional peculiarities.
    • knowledge of theories of governance, democracy, human rights and civil liberties, political culture and socialization, state and political structure of Georgia, its development and policy implementation mechanisms in the context of domestic and foreign policy.
    • knowledge of key features of European integration, it theoretical foundation, enlargement process and policies, as well as the political institutionalization of its democratic principles.
    • knowledge of the essence of the political sociology and its development, of politics as a social phenomenon, and its sociological as well as economic aspects.
    • knowledge of research methods and methodology, its relevance in geopolitical and strategic analysis, as well as proper utilization of academic literature and English language in political science.
       

  • Skills
  • After completing the program graduates will have:

    • ability to conduct research on the selected topics relevant to political science and within the given analytical framework, to select the proper methodological toolset, along with the proper use of sources and literature for case and desk research, to draft and review research reports by carefully selecting the academic writing style.
    • ability to review and analyze the different aspects of political systems and governance regimes, different electoral systems and electoral results, political culture and institutions.
    • ability to categorize political ideas and ideologies and define their relevance in political processes, identify different political systems, linkages between the regional and trans-regional factors in South Caucasus, as well as major actors and their interests.
    • ability to evaluate the functionality of global political order, the contemporary challenges, the aspects of EU-integration and enlargement, the concept of nationalism  and its current forms in the context of contemporary political development.
    •  ability to identify major factors that drive social change and movements, the legitimacy and effectiveness of the political regimes .

    Program details:

    In addition to humanitarian-social and STEM blocks and the program's core subjects, the student can accumulate 96 credits with the minor program, program electives or free elective credits. The program considers the different competencies of students in the English language. Namely, the student starts the English language from the stage that corresponds to his knowledge, which is determined based on the assessment obtained on the unified national exams: if the student's score is 63%, he is placed on English B1/1 level; if the student's score is placed in the gap [64%-86%]- B1/2; if the student's score is in the interval (87%-100%)-B1/2. If the language skills are above 93% student can be tested and granted B2/2 if the maximum scores achieved. If not the student will be ranked back at B2/1. If student misses the language tests once scored more than 93% before, he will be ranked at B2/1 level.

    Teaching Process Characteristics:

    To obtain a bachelor's degree in Political Science, a student needs to complete 240 ECTS, composed of 12 ECTS from the humanitarian-social block, 6 ECTS from the STEM block, 156 ECTS from the core subjects of the program, 18 ECTS of free credits, 48 ECTS by choosing electives classes [U1] . This regulation is valid for the students enrolled before 2021. The teaching language of the program is Georgian, with separate English-language components. Accordingly, all components are taught mainly in Georgian, except for those courses where English-language literature is used.
