Program goals:

The program aims to train highly qualified, multi-skilled musicians—equipped with both practical and theoretical knowledge—who are focused on traditional (authentic) performance. The curriculum is based on a comprehensive, integrated, and interdisciplinary approach tailored to the student, covering both Georgian liturgical chant and folk music. It is delivered by academic staff with extensive experience in performance, teaching, and research. Instruction in Georgian folk song, instrumental music, and liturgical chant is grounded in the performance practices, modal structures, and intonation systems inherent to the original traditional style. Mastery of these elements is supported by the consistent use of authentic audio recordings, while the final semester includes a field expedition and practical training with traditional performers. Upon completion of the program, students will have acquired diverse practical and theoretical knowledge regarding traditional Georgian music, as well as an understanding of music theory and traditional choreographic arts. They will also develop the fundamental skills necessary for conducting fieldwork. This multifaceted knowledge will assist graduates in establishing themselves in the labor market; they will not only be well-qualified candidates for folk and liturgical music ensembles but will also be capable of forming and instructing performance groups, both within Georgia and abroad. Furthermore, the knowledge gained through the program will provide students with the motivation and foundation to pursue further studies in traditional music at higher academic levels.
