Program permission: Candidates with a master's degree or an equivalent academic degree in political science or international relations are eligible to apply to the doctoral program. The candidate must provide a document proving their English language proficiency at least at the B2 (Intermediate) level (an international certificate of English language proficiency or a national assessment and examination certification, a certificate issued by the centre - Certus; or a diploma/attachment or certificate of completion of an English-language bachelor's or master's program; or an internal university examination in English) and present thesis research concept. When making a decision, the school board considers the value of the concept according to the following criteria: - actuality and relevance of the concept to the research topic announced by the school; - the literature analysis within the concept; - The scientific and practical value of the research topic presented in the concept.
Program goals:

The goal of the program is to educate a highly qualified political science researcher, who, based on the thorough awareness of the subfields of political science such as political philosophy, ideologies and research methods, will be able to generate new knowledge of political processes as a social phenomena  to be analyzed through their regularity, causality and scientific as well as practical utility.  Also, the program's goal is to develop, on the one hand, the ability to plan and conduct lecture courses and, on the other hand, the ability to independently plan and conduct research in the field of political science, which promotes liberal-humanistic values ​​and democratic society principles in epistemic community 

A doctor of political science can be employed in research and academic institutes and organizations, state and private agencies and higher educational institutions on academic positions.

Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding
    • has a thorough knowledge of achievements in the political science, including those of interdisciplinary research and of close linkages between the political philosophy (theory) and other fields such as the political economy or comparative politics, that contributes to knowledge proliferation. 
    • can re-evaluate the existing knowledge in political science, in particular on topics such as state and state institutions, democratization, identity and state internal factors affecting the dynamics of international relations. 
    • has a knowledge of current research priorities in political science, scientific methodology, in particular the methodological differences, limitations and commonalities existing between the rational choice and sociological approaches.
    • has a solid knowledge of the philosophy of science (types of scientific picture of universe, their structural differences and functions, evolution of the scientific picture, features of evolutionary paradigms, the essence of historic, systemic, sociological and anthropocentric paradigms, causes of the paradigm change.
    • knows modern standards of research design, general methodology and qualitative method selection.
    • knows the techniques of preparation and conducting of HEI (Higher Education Institution) courses in compliance with modern evaluation strategies;

  • After the program completion, the doctor can:

    • develop analytical (general and very specific) models that are based on major research approaches, including those of methodological complementarism.   
    • independently plan, execute and monitor research in various thematic fields of the political science, i.e. state political regimes, democracy and democratic transition, conflicts, international political system and political economy.
    • develop and implement teaching and general class activities.
    • apply arguments drawn from different theories in political science and philosophy (logical positivism, falsification, scientific revolutions, induction, realism) and assess argument validity while crosschecking the relevant scientific theories.
    • identify the causal linkages based o the theoretical and systemic analysis of relevant, actual and problematic research topics in political science. 
    • engage in written communication about scientific research findings with the professional community, academic standards for scientific publications, strategic communications, and engaging in polemics with a professional audience. Ability to plan and implement educational lecture activities

  • Responsibility and autonomy
    • conducts research focused on the creation of new, interdisciplinary knowledge based on the innovative synthesis of relevant information for the field while protecting appropriate values ​​(protection of academic ethics norms and integrity, development of democratic and civic values), as well as finding new values ​​based on the recognition of fundamental scientific, academic and humanitarian values—/Establishment, as well as the implementation of new research projects.

    Program details:

    The following evaluation system is used for the evaluation of the doctoral thesis:

    a) summa cum laude – excellent paper - 91% and more;

    b) very good (magna cum laude) – result that exceeds the requirements in every respect - 81-90%;

    c) Good (cum laude) – results that exceed the requirements - 71-80%;

    d) average (bene) - the result that meets the requirements in every respect - 61-70%;

    e) Satisfactory (rite) - the result, which, despite the shortcomings, still meets the requirements - 51-60%;

    f) unsatisfactory (insufficienter) – a result that does not meet the requirements due to significant deficiencies - 41-50%, 

    g) completely unsatisfactory (sub omni canone) – a result that does not entirely meet the requirements - < 40%

    At least 30,000 words are determined as a doctoral thesis's mandatory number of words.

    Teaching Process Characteristics:

    The teaching of study components is semester-long and includes 60 ECTS (mainly - 45 ECTS and optional 15 ECTS courses, including the assistantship of the professor (teaching practice), which is mandatory for all doctoral students who do not have relevant experience at the University of Applied Sciences) The duration of the semester is determined by 22, and the academic year - 44 weeks.

    The study components are led by the authors of the relevant component, the research component - by the doctoral advisor of the doctoral student. 

    The Scientific Advisory Board supervises the doctoral student's research component stages.
